Unlike conventional wireless networks (such as cellular telephones and PDAs), a fixed wireless characteristic is that transmitter and receivers are stationary. The base station is generally a radio mounted on a local high spot, commonly a tower. Because of the topography of the Okanagan, an access point fixed to the mountain side delivers the high speed internet to all the people in the Okanagan valley. On the client side, a little white box typically called a CPE (customer premise equipment) is installed on the side of their home/office which transmits and receives wirelessly to the mountain access point.
